Cookie and privacy policy

Introduction

When you use Bownty, we collect information about you that is used to improve the site and make our recommendations and content more relevant to you. If you do not wish for information to be collected, you should delete your cookies and stop using the website. Below you can read more about which information we collect, for what purposes, and which third parties have access to it.

When you use Bownty (and Bownty's media), you accept that we use cookies and your information in the way described below.

Cookies

The website uses "cookies" — small text files that are stored on your computer, mobile phone or equivalent device for the purpose of recognising the device, remembering preferences, producing statistics and targeting content. Cookies cannot contain harmful code (such as viruses).

About cookies

Cookies are small pieces of information that we (and most other websites) place on your IT equipment. The cookie does not identify you as a person, but identifies your device. This means we can, for example, see when you last visited the site — but without knowing who you are (unless you have told us).

Our cookies

We use both temporary and permanent cookies.

Temporary cookies are deleted when you close your web browser. Permanent cookies are stored on your computer/phone/device until they are deleted. Permanent cookies will delete themselves after a period, but are renewed each time you visit the site.

Purpose of cookies

We use cookies, among other things, to:

  • remember your choices in our product flows (e.g. category and preferences)
  • compile statistics about use of the website (e.g. which categories and combinations are used most)
  • improve the relevance of content and any advertising
  • enable integration with social media (e.g. sharing and plugins)
  • measure traffic and any resulting sales via affiliate and partner programmes

Third-party cookies

We use cookies from other parties, including for statistics, social integrations and affiliate measurement:

  • Google Analytics: for statistical purposes. You can opt out of cookies here: http://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout
  • Facebook: set if you interact with a Facebook plugin or are already logged in to Facebook from another source.
  • Various affiliate and partner networks: used to measure traffic and resulting sales from referrals from us.

Deletion and blocking

It is possible to delete or block cookies. You can do so by following the instructions in your browser's support pages.

If you want to delete your cookies, you can often press CTRL + SHIFT + DELETE at the same time on a PC or in most modern browsers. If the shortcut does not work, you can visit the support pages for the browser in question.

If you delete or block cookies, you may experience that the website does not function optimally and that certain features (e.g. remembering your choices) do not work as intended.

Personal data

General

Personal data is any kind of information that can to some extent be attributed to you as a person. When you use Bownty, we collect and process a range of such information. For example, when you:

  • use our search field and product flows (ask questions and choose preferences)
  • click on recommended products and price links
  • sign up for newsletters or other communication (if/when we offer it)
  • contact us via email or forms on the site

We typically collect and process the following information:

  • technical information about your device (browser, operating system, IP address, device type)
  • information about your use of the site (category choices, steps in our needs flow, search terms, clicks on products and links)
  • approximate geographic location (e.g. country/city level based on IP)

If you give explicit consent and enter information yourself, we may also process: name, email address and other contact details (e.g. when contacting us or signing up for the newsletter). We do not collect national ID numbers.

As a starting point, we only register the information you provide to us yourself, or that you have given a third party permission to pass on to us (e.g. by signing up for communication). The information is not passed on to third parties unless stated in this policy and there is a lawful basis for it.

Security

We process your personal data securely and confidentially in accordance with applicable legislation, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and national data protection legislation. Your information will only be used for the purposes for which it was collected, and will be deleted or anonymised when it is no longer relevant.

We have implemented technical and organisational measures that protect your information against unintended or unlawful deletion, disclosure, loss, degradation, unauthorised access, misuse or other processing in breach of the legislation.

Purposes

We use personal data for the following purposes:

  • to deliver our core function: helping you find relevant products and make better purchasing decisions
  • to remember your choices in our needs-based flows so we can build recommendations on your preferences
  • to compile statistics and analyse use of the website so we can improve features, content and user experience
  • to be able to communicate with you if you contact us or sign up for newsletters
  • to protect and operate our systems (troubleshooting, logging, abuse prevention, etc.)

Retention period

We retain information for the period necessary for the purposes for which it was collected, and as permitted by law. Anonymised or aggregated data for statistics and analysis may be retained for longer periods. Personally identifiable data (e.g. contact details) is deleted or anonymised when it is no longer relevant, or when you ask us to, provided we are not legally required to retain it longer (e.g. accounting rules).

Disclosure of information

Data about your use of the website (e.g. which pages you visit, digital flows you complete, and how you interact with our recommendations) may be passed on to third parties to the extent that this information is necessary for them to deliver technical services to us. This may, for example, be:

  • hosting and operations providers
  • statistics and analytics tools (e.g. web analytics)
  • partners that deliver price and product data (e.g. price comparison or affiliate partners)

These third parties only process information on our behalf and on our instructions (as data processors) and may not use it for their own purposes.

Disclosure of personal data such as name, email, etc. to other parties will only take place if you give explicit consent, or if it is necessary to fulfil an agreement with you, and we have a lawful basis for the disclosure.

As a starting point, we only use data processors located in the EU/EEA or in countries that can ensure your data adequate protection under applicable rules.

Access and complaints

You have the right to be informed which personal data we have registered about you, in a commonly used format (data portability). You can at any time object to information being used for direct marketing, and you have the right to have information that is incorrect or no longer relevant corrected or deleted.

If the processing of personal data is based on your consent, you can withdraw your consent at any time. Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of processing before the withdrawal.

Requests for access, correction, deletion or objection can be made via our contact form.

If you want to complain about our processing of your personal data, you can contact your national data protection authority. You can find contact details on their website.

Protection and changes

We store personal data on systems with limited access, located in a controlled environment, and our security measures are monitored continuously to ensure that user data is handled responsibly.

Please note that we may need to make changes to how we handle personal data. We therefore reserve the right to change and update our guidelines for processing personal data. In the event of significant changes, we will inform you via the website.
